Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation is a vibrant Indigenous community located on Lake Simcoe, Ontario. The community has proposed a modern gas station and commercial building that aligns with their cultural values and sustains their economic growth. Housing a gas station, convenience store, crafts shop, tobacco retail and cannabis and coffee vendors, this project will help support the community vision for self-sufficiency and can be a symbol of cultural pride and sustainability.
Â
The vision for the Hadden Road area is to transform this greenfield acreage into a place of cultural and environmental significance in the centre of the community, while respecting the natural environment and remaining in harmony with the surrounding territory. In conversation with the deep history of this Nation, the island, and the whole Tkaronto region, project has been designed to honour the stories and traditions of the community. Instead of being merely a pit stop, the intention is for this commercial project to become a hub for community activities, providing space for gatherings, events, and everyday social interaction.
Â
Environment first principles are a key priority for the community, and landscape restoration will be undertaken to create an attractive destination and increase the presence of native plantings and wildlife around the site.
